As time moves forward, I find advice from the older entrepreneurs more and more irrelevant. NOT because it's bad advice, NOT because it's with ill intention, but simply because their situation, experience, and background is completely different from my own. So different, that I fear if I followed it, it'd have the opposite effect.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
- kordless 12y agoImparting wisdom is a joy to practice and participate in, when it's done right. It requires both parties listen to each other and find commonality in the things that have brought them joy and sadness (to name two) in life. If you aren't finding those conversations with others - regardless of age - I'd suggest meeting more people.
- k-mcgrady 12y agoWhat in this post is irrelevant to entrepreneurs getting started today? It seems like pretty simple, standard business advice.
- semerda 12y agoPositive psychology advise like "always be looking forward" and "embraced change or become stagnant" is great for newbies but those that already get it are looking for business advise like "execution strategies". Maybe some secret sauce. However time makes most of it commoditized and no longer secret sauce. So you are left with positive psychology advise & domain experience.
- snowwrestler 12y agoTech entrepreneurs have already faced similar decision points--see Steve Jobs and Pixar, or Bill Gates starting his foundation. And of course Elon Musk and his many companies. There was a time when rock music labels were some of the hottest, hippest, most innovative companies out there. Does anyone think of music labels that way anymore? And of course aviation itself was once a free-wheeling industry of young entrepreneurs. Now it's a highly regulated commodity. It may seem hard to believe, but this will happen to Internet technology companies too. You can already see the shape of it taking form, from sales taxes on Amazon, to regulations in AirBnB and Uber, and of course the massive consolidation in progress at the ISP level. Innovative entrepreneurs who want to have a lifetime impact in the world would do well to start thinking now about the next industry to jump into.
- semerda 12y agoDitto. A lot of the stuff that happened back then cannot be repeated again. That secret sauce is no longer available and/or was a 1 time advantage. However the positive psychology, attitude to getting stuff done & domain experience are the valuable pieces that are relevant till today.
