And how about the quality and integrity of staple foods available to them. What if Bubba's kid grows up and decides she wants an education? Suddenly Bubba needs to pony up $30,000 a year for university or ask his daughter to take on a large debt.
- cwaniak2 13y agoState funded universities in the US are cheaper than their European counterparts.
- cylinder 13y agoYou're absolutely wrong. Even for residents at the well-off University of Texas in the well-off state of Texas pay $5,000 per semester for tuition only (tons of fees added to this). That's $40,000 for four years. In Germany you'd be hard pressed to find tuition higher than 500 euros per semester. And don't get me started on graduate and professional degrees. In Europe you study medicine, law, dentistry etc as an undergraduate in a 5-6 year program. In the US you need to do an undergraduate degree for four-years plus four more years of graduate school to become a physician. The cost of the graduate degree itself is anywhere from $150,000-$300,000.
- mcv 13y agoTuition in Europe varies a lot. In some countries it may cost €2000 per year, in others it's free.
- marvin 13y agoTuition in Norway is $80 USD/semester, as one data point. Are state funded US universities cheaper than this? (You also pay a couple of cents if you want to print documents, but these are the only fees I have paid in six years of University).
- cwaniak2 13y agoI'm sure in Saudi Arabia it's cheaper than that, or free. That's the thing with oil-rich countries. Saying let's have stuff "for free" because it works in Norway with a few million citizens and abundant resources makes exactly as much sense as saying do it because Saudi Arabia does it. More people live in New York suburban area or LA suburban area than in Norway. We can't live off oil and gas reserves, ok? Socialism in resourceful country might seem to make sense. Monarchy (Saudi Arabia is a monarchy) might seem as plausible and fantastic system just because Saudi Arabians have free stuff. But I wouldn't claim US needs to be a monarchy. This is quite weird this whole leftist argumentation here.
