Start with Visual Studio (VS) and program in either vb.net, or preferably c#.net. VS helps a lot while you're learning, and you can choose to program for either windows or the web. Add the MVC framework and you get a fairly decent web development environment where you can then look into JQuery and maybe even SQL. Once you're happy there, a move to Python, PHP, Ruby or Java will be relatively easy. You don't need to know a language like C unless you plan to work with the elders.
