Great analogy, this can't be said enough. Although there has to be a distinction made between using the latest technology and how you choose to architect and design a product with that technology. I've seen super complicated web architectures with something as widely used as PHP. So it's not so much about what tools you use but rather how you use them. Choose the right tool for the job while keeping the business constraints in mind.
