The maintenance aspect is huge. I've been able to observe how fancy, complex systems fare over a long period of time (as opposed to simple systems): in almost every case the "cool" complex system required way more maintenance. There are just more things that can break. Unfortunately, we don't normally record the "long tail" cost of a feature. We build and deploy, but don't keep an eye on how much time it takes to maintain that feature.
