85,000 people is a tiny amount of people all things considered. Australia had 129,250 placed for skilled immigrants in the 2011-12 period and that's with a population of around 10% of the US. I'm not saying that the US is not a popular choice for people wanting to immigrate, but I think that it is more that there is a good quality of life to be had, with the added bonus of being an English speaking country (which is the most popular choice as a 2nd language learn).
