Amount of fuel saved is actually negligible. With a fleet of 100,000 trucks, it comes out to be less than 1 gallon per truck per year in savings.

- Igglyboo 13y agoThey said they saved 10 million gallons of gas, that's 100 gallons per truck which is $30 million with 3 dollar gas. I think you did your math wrong.
- blinkingled 13y agoFrom TFA - it's not just the right turns that saved them that much fuel though - > As of 2012, the right turn rule combined with other improvements -- for the wow factor, UPS doesn't separate them out -- saved around 10 million gallons of gas and reduced emissions by the equivalent of taking 5,300 cars of the road for a year.
- pcurve 13y ago10 million gallons is since the program was implemented, which was 10 years ago. Even so, my math was off.
- mikeash 13y agoAt $3/gallon that still makes it worth employing a couple of people full time just to work on this.
- dm2 13y agoIt probably only applies to deliveries in dense cities with a grid-like street layout. Anywhere else and it's probably faster to just make the left turn.
- pcurve 13y agoGood point.
