Github and OSS contributions only seem like they're important because of disproportionate mentions among the monoculture of bloggers, HN commenters, etc. They're not. A good company will hire you if you can demonstrate one way or another that you're worth hiring. A bad company will value mediocre code coming in from those venues and discount other types of substantive achievements.
