WRT scrolling, this is what I use in my .emacs: (setq scroll-margin 0 scroll-conservatively 100000 scroll-preserve-screen-position 1) (setq mouse-wheel-scroll-amount '(3 ((shift) . 1))) ;; one line at a time (setq mouse-wheel-progressive-speed nil) ;; don't accelerate scrolling (setq mouse-wheel-follow-mouse 't) ;; scroll window under mouse (setq scroll-step 1) I dislike accelerated scrolling and use searches or registers for moving in big files, so this works quite nicely for me.
