If a young girl is taken to a work place and all she sees is 20+ men working there (and chances are that is what she would see), that can definitely be discouraging. Unfortunately, women in engineering isn't common enough and personally observing a status quo of there being very few women can cause a problem in what a child sees as their possibilities.
