Google App Engine to support Dart
- pg_is_a_butt 13y agoall the new "managed VM" talk for GAE goes completely against all the things that make GAE great. not having a writable local filesystem allows GAE instances to be extremely scalable... syncing local file system changes across apps would be extremely costly (basically using Google Cloud Storage, and then doing a new GAE instance deploy every time a file is changed)... you know 2 seconds after the feature is allowed, some bonehead dev will make his site open a local file and write logs to it from every request. now you've got a nightmare, and explaining to devs not used to "google-scale" won't work. Google Cloud already offers "managed VM" through the Compute Engine product.
- patrickaljord 13y agoManaged VMs are not the same thing as AppEngine apps. They are generic vms to run any kind of service that can then be called by your AE apps. It was announced a couple of days ago.
- spankalee 13y agoIt's my understanding that Managed VMs are a type of AppEngine app. They are scaled the same way and have access to the same services like Datastore, memcache, task queues, mail, etc.
- magicalist 13y agoIt might just be a matter of semantics, but in the link there it makes it sound like a Compute Engine VM with access to AppEngine features. In the event they did a few days ago, I think it was the managed VM part where they demoed SSHing in and switching some things over from managed to manual, so I imagine it is much closer to compute engine.
- j_baker 13y agoManaged VMs are basically app engine apps that run on a compute engine instance. It gives you the ease of deployment and scaling of App Engine without the limitations of the App Engine sandbox.
- mark_l_watson 13y ago+1 exactly right This is like saying that Dart can be run server side on an EC2 instance. I would like to see Dart (server side) added to the AppEngine supported language list (Go, Python, Java, PHP).
- madfarmer 13y agoYea.. With Managed VMs You can run any VM on the App Engine stack which is f'ing cool. The most obvious use for this is Node IMO, since ppl have gone crazy for that shit. Soon the world will no longer need backend developers or dev ops.
- yeukhon 13y agoI have never seen anyone with -1 karma before. Your name said it all: madfarmer. Farmer as in someone managing virtual machine farm.
- pjmlp 13y agoThe only way for Dart to ever be more than a nice re-iteration of Smalltalk is if Google makes it a must-have language for their ecosystem. Managed VMs are no different than Amazon or Azure VMs.

- blackoil 13y agoGoogle/MS/ should add Dart/Typescript/asm.js/... native runtime for node.js. Will give a major performance boost to backend and developer will still be working in one language.
