I will largely back all of this. There is a fairly substantial world of difference between those who are excellent at marketing and those who are excellent at engineering and in my experience the two don't overlap currently anywhere near as much as they should.
I have experience doing online marketing for a fairly substantial portfolio for large multi-nationals with budgets that would make your head spin.
However, after coming across guys like Patrick here a while back I noticed a huge hole in what I was doing that was already starting to nag at me and that was a constant dependency on getting my clients developers onside (which is not an easy task for 20 different reasons).
So I started to spend some time learning to code and am currently in the middle of building my first SaaS application of which I plan on providing a lot of very detailed behind the scenes marketing info out about it to help show others that it really isn't as hard or as magical as it is many times made out to be.
