A friend of mine has the last name Miiller—i.e. "Miller" with a ludicrous extra "i". This is because when his ancestors named Müller came over, someone didn't recognize "ü" and wrote down "ii".
He's very proud of it, several generations later.
- dllthomas 13y agoTo be fair, the difference between ü and ii in cursive is tiny.
- dublinben 13y agoThe name "miiller" actually seems pretty common. Your friend is far from the only person from a family (presumably descended from Müllers) with that spelling. Curiously, how do they pronounce it?
- gruseom 13y agoYou're right. "Common" means something so different than it used to pre-internet. I'm reminded of that every time I google something I think is special. Edit (missed your other question): He pronounces it "Miller".
