In my opinion it's OK as long as NPM Inc will follow the same model as github and docker, i.e. free public open source repositories and paid private repositories. Another reason why VCs invest in open-source ecosystem is that it indirectly helps their other portfolio companies, even if original investment doesn't pay off.
