(I've posted versions of this before...) Someone I knew at a quasi-government organisation went to their boss to ask for more staff and/or more money because they were being overworked and had far too much to do in to a 40 hour week. Employee was told there was no money in the budget for staff/raises, but he'd have his official hours cut to 4 days a week on his same yearly salary, therefore he was getting a 20% bonus. 20%! Wow! He still had the same amount of 40+ hours work to do, so the net result was exactly nothing. He went back to his desk and was found a short time later slashing his wrists. He spent some time in the local psych ward and once he was medicated and on an even keel he went back to work, but was never the same again. He just kinda pottered around in his own heavily medicated haze and not doing much of anything.
