CrunchPad Specs
- redorb 17y agoFirst $200 (I didn't believe it) - then $300 (I figured he wouldn't risk raising the price twice; - now its $400, unless he hits a grand slam and gets this thing into a carrier or even multiple carriers; and subsidized for $199 with 2/yr mobile broadband contract..
- tdavis 17y agoChrist, I'd rather pay the $400. A 2-year mobile brandband contract is practically useless for anything but very light usage, since the monthly limits are usually about 5GB. I don't really plan to buy a Crunchpad, but you'd think we'd been bitten hard enough by AT&T recently to learn our lesson.
- socratees 17y agoMany major hardware players have some form of tablet device in the offing. This market space is going to be a competitive one.
- axod 17y agoLike who? :/ Apple??? yeah funny.
- vaksel 17y agowasn't the whole point of the crunchpad to make it cheap as hell? After all, the original techcrunch post was: "We Want A Dead Simple Web Tablet For $200. Help Us Build It."
- jsz0 17y agoThere's a major problem subsidizing a device like this. The target audience most likely already has a SmartPhone and residential internet service via cable or DSL. That's probably $90-$100 worth of Internet access alone. How many people will be willing to pay an additional $50-$60 for a data only cell plan on top of that? If you're (un)lucky enough to have a spouse or child who wants a data plan your Internet bill alone could easily be $200. Don't forget voice service. Unlimited SMS. Say hello to a $300+ monthly Internet/voice bill. Makes the base price of $400 look like a pittance compared to the $3600 yearly service fee the typical person might end up paying in this scenario.
- tallanvor 17y agoLet's be honest, $400 really isn't all that expensive and it wouldn't stop a lot of the target market from buying one. Of course, I guess we'll have to wait until it actually gets released to find out if $400 is right.
- finebanana 17y agoIf it's using the Linux kernel, it's not mentioned anywhere. This is taking the credit from all the linux code contributors everywhere. Shame. Shame.
- jrockway 17y agoThe GPL does not have an advertising clause.
- TweedHeads 17y agoIf you take and give back you're a friend, if you don't you're a thief.
- ErrantX 17y agoThe styling isn't actually as slick looking as I thought it might be.
- Raphael 17y agoScreen resolution? RAM? Flash memory?
- pclark 17y agoseems like quite a lot of feature creep. mobile internet now huh?
- jasonkester 17y agoOne USB port? Dude... You're only ever one lap-month away from wiggling any given USB port into uselessness if anything is plugged into it. Relying on a single one for the whole thing is a recipe for disaster. Case in point, by my old Latitude C400. With no optical drive and a single dying USB port, it's one failed hard drive away from being toast. Right now I can get files onto it over the network, but I don't look forward to reinstalling those network drivers without any input device other than the keyboard.
- TweedHeads 17y agoIf I ever buy a tablet it will be an Apple iPad, no matter how expensive it is.
