While I totally understand not wanting to incur legal fees, don't think of Lawyers as the last result. Good lawyers make things clear, especially when you're otherwise not super well defined as a business. Is that to say they're the first go-to? Of course not. But the moment you get the feeling like you're getting bent over a barrel, you get a lawyer. You don't wait, you contact them and at the very least get a clear idea of the direction you should probably move in.
