Perl was the first scripting language I really learned when I was an intern at Sun. I read the whole Camel Book my first couple weeks there. I had an awesome sysadmin mentor that was a Perl guru, and when I asked for help he would give me mysterious one-liners that did powerful things, simply saying "use this". I had little idea what I was doing at the time, but it was awesome. I use Ruby now for most scripting, and it is also awesome, but a lot less mysterious.
