As much as I like playing with Max and PureData, I think they also highlight some of the many problems with the whole "Visual Programming" thing. They don't play well with version control and are a nightmare to debug. The developer will also quickly hit a point where the visual nature of the tool becomes more of a hindrance than a help, when they're left drowning in a tangled mass of pipes and boxes. I would really love to see a fresh take on this idea and an attempt to address some of the above problems.
