Given the GNU makefile conventions ( https://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/html_node/Makefile-Conventions.html https://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/html_node/Makefile-Conven... ), I'd say that packaging with automake is preferable to hand-rolling a Makefile.
