It is overkill, but dedicated special purpose hardware like a hardware SSL Accelerator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSL_acceleration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSL_acceleration) is certainly useful, and its not unfathomable that one of these would use an FPGA.
