Referrals and working for past co-workers seem to account for a good amount of hires at most of the small companies I've represented (independent recruiter), particularly over the past five years. It's not unusual to see teams reform again and again at new firms. But when a company grows significantly or needs to grow fast, it's difficult for that hiring model to scale.
