My dad was an accountant, and never said so explicitly, but he made it clear through the books on his shelves, his investment in technology like PCs and portable computers, and racks and racks of floppies, that a serious person should educate themself in programming. I tried, hard, to emulate him, and though I went on an entirely different path (theatre, design, etc.) I've found myself, 15 years later, as a front end web dev learning as much backend as I have time for. I feel like I've only now started to fulfill some of what I aspired to as a child, watching my father learn to code.
