This is precisely what happened to me. I started off in Molecular and Cellular Bio, but recently switched to programming. Like you said, the field is simply brutal. Making it to the top of your career track is extremely difficult and demands a lot of time and effort for little pay. Not to mention that final step, becoming a professor, is out of your control as all you can do is wait for an existing one to retire or die.
