Ask HN: Is there any comprehensive(ish) Bibliographic API?
I've been trying to build a citation manager/generator as a side project. I've been stuck on data fetching issues for about two days now because nothing seems to have the detail I need.
I have played with the google books API, the WorldCat OCLC API, and Amazon API. There seems to be no reliable way to get all the information on a given book needed for citations via API.
If translators or compilers are even included in the response data they are listed as authors in OCLC. Google Books doesn't bother to include the city of publication and (as far as I can tell) doesn't include non-author contributors, and while I would love to use Amazon (in order to capitalize on the affiliate links more easily) they don't seem terribly invested in providing data about their books in any meaningful way.
Does anyone know of an API/process whereby I could use an ISBN or similar industry identifier in order to get accurate and complete information on a given book?
If I can't figure out how to differentiate contributors into authors/translators/compilers/editors then I will have users mark them as such and maybe take some sort of "vote" from contributing users for the default assignations, but it's less than ideal. I want to make it a one-click bibliographic-info generator, but this is seeming less possible as I go on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance HN.
