I do something similar with Excel files using jq (http://stedolan.github.io/jq/ http://stedolan.github.io/jq/) and j (https://npmjs.org/package/j https://npmjs.org/package/j):
$ j -J sample_data.xlsb tbl | jq 'length'

$ j -J sample_data.xlsb tbl | jq '[.[]|.id]|max'

$ j -J sample_data.xlsb tbl | jq '[.[]|.id]|min'

$ j -J sample_data.xlsb tbl | jq '[.[]|.value]|add'
