Even in the 90s Java decompilers existed, so the "We had no source code" excuse sounds a bit strange :-)
- chadfowler 13y agoOh we used those too, but in this case there were also native libraries. I was a regular user of jad, even sometimes recompiling and replacing stuff (ooooweeee) in production.
