Official Sass port. That's pretty big news.
- ChikkaChiChi 13y agoAt the expense of not Googling it on my own, can someone provide a quick rundown of why this is a big deal? What's the difference between Sass and LESS?
- ncavig 13y agoShort answer; preference.
- ihsw 13y agoOfficial support from the Bootstrap team rather than third-party support. Sass and LESS releases will be hand-in-hand now rather than staggered.
- nawitus 13y agoUsing Bootstrap pretty much meant that you had to use LESS, now you can choose between Sass and LESS. The differences are not that big, though.
- yock 13y agoIn addition to what has been said by others, the Rails asset pipeline supports Sass out of the box. Now Rails developers can use Bootstrap without bringing in third-party LESS support into Rails.
- jcomis 13y agoPreference really. But most of the front-enders I work with seem to prefer Sass for some reason and thus have been pretty dedicated to Foundation in the past. With this official port being introduced it makes bootstrap a more viable option to those who spend most of their time using Sass.
- hackerboos 13y agoYou can copy existing CSS into a SASS project using SCSS.
- mctx 13y agoOr use css2sass.heroku.com for SASS
- stana 13y agoSeems to me Sass is preferred because of Compass tools.
- pcorsaro 13y agoThe SASS port might be the thing that gets me to upgrade from 2.3 to 3 finally.
- Trufa 13y agoThe main reason I chose LESS was because of bootstrap support, I'm extremely happy with it and can't believe I didn't start with it before. I'll see how this port goes, but I've read some good stuff about SASS: http://css-tricks.com/sass-vs-less/ http://css-tricks.com/sass-vs-less/ Any other points anyone can make for SASS against LESS?
- riffraff 13y agoI think since that article came out sass included a new very nice feature in the form of mixins[0]. Also, Compass[1] is awesome when working with sass, but I don't know if there is a less equivalent. - lowboy 13y agoI used to be a proponent of Compass, but I started using Bourbon[0] and Neat[1] and enjoy them more. They don't require a project definition, nor do they provide a utility to compile Sass, they're just a mixin library. And that suits me. - timdorr 13y agoSASS is backed by Ruby, so you can take advantage of all of Ruby's power, including reading from the filesystem. For instance, combined with Compass, you can read image sizes and automatically pull in width and height for a class. Or you can more easily make sprite images via a mixin that knows the size of the image and how many rows/columns you have. I've been using bootstrap-sass since it was targeting bootstrap 2.3. They've done a great job of keeping up with bootstrap development, so it's great to see them officially supported. It wouldn't shock me at all if Bootstrap eventually moved over to SASS officially in the future.
- WalterSear 13y agoActually, I moved away from Sass >because< of the Ruby tie in. Transpiling Sass to css using Ruby was using up most of my day. It's a dog! Fortunately, now there is node-sass and it's grunt wrapper, making for vastly faster transpiling process. https://github.com/andrew/node-sass https://github.com/andrew/node-sass
- qhoc 13y agoWhere does it say Sass support? I am not seeing it.
- rschmitty 13y agoIt's on the homepage http://getbootstrap.com/ http://getbootstrap.com/

- qhoc 13y agoOh I see. I have been using this https://github.com/jlong/sass-bootstrap https://github.com/jlong/sass-bootstrap
- yzap 13y agoNow only if there was an official Stylus port... One can dream, hehe. : )
- adefa 13y agoIt's been around for a little bit: https://rubygems.org/gems/bootstrap-sass https://rubygems.org/gems/bootstrap-sass I believe it's just Thomas McDonald's port made official.
