Related work anecdote: I was working on IPv6 support for a C code base running on a Linux appliance. Time came for me to have a go at the traffic shaper application. Was given repository access. Had assumed the whole application was doing to be littered with IPv4 specific netlink/ioctl-stuff. Turned out most of it was string manipulation and calling tc using system(). Like less than 10 lines of bash turned in to a way bigger heap of potential failure points. Nothing against C as a language, it's just that to some people, everything is a nail.
- justin_vanw 13y agoIn the face of that, this seems insignificant. C is perfectly fine for this, and anything else, especially if you are very proficient as whoever created this library clearly is. It's going to make it MUCH more painful for people to use though, especially if they don't have gcc on their servers and their desktop isn't linux.
