  To the extent that this is a popular idea, it wouldn't be a big deal for someone to come up with a commercial 'final logic module' that sat between the user interface and the furnace. It could do a sanity check on the requested operation before carrying it out. (Sure, it would have to have most of the functionality of a thermostat, but so what.)
