- FooBarWidget 13y agoH265 has a smaller adoption base than even WebM. If we're talking about that league anyway, then maybe Daala is competitive. They claim that it is better than H265.
- anon1385 13y agoDaala is years away from being usable, never mind achieving widespread adoption. It is not competing with H265, it's competing with whatever comes after H265.
- ZeroGravitas 13y agoDifferent codecs are on different timelines, but unless H.266 comes much faster than previous iterations, then Daala will be competing with H.265.
- sho_hn 13y agoWikipedia Commons has overriding concerns, such as spread and availability (including licensing) of codecs. H.265 isn't meeting those bars yet.
- mschuster91 13y agoyet it will take quite a massive amount of time for implementation. For the next 4 years h264 will stay the dominant force in video, simply because of the backlog of only-h264-capable devices. What 'd be cool is if mobile/laptop/desktop vendors would start sticking FPGAs on the boards to allow for dynamic updates of video decode cores.
- klodolph 13y agoWrong goal. Wikimedia is looking for a video format that reaches most users now, not one that will probably reach many users a few years from now.
