I've been using emacs for about a month now. I've definitely saved a lot more time than I've spent fiddling with it.

  You won't really blow time fiddling with it until you get the hang of elisp. :) Then every little thing that bugs you makes you think, "Oh, I could just override this..." (defalias 'yes-or-no-p 'y-or-n-p) ;don't bug me
