Not true. The older 2012 rMBP will do it fine too on newer versions of OS X or linux/windows. And that is just over the HDMI port. With a Active DP 1.1 -> HDMI

Not true. The older 2012 rMBP will do it fine too on newer versions of OS X or linux/windows. And that is just over the HDMI port. With a Active DP 1.1 -> HDMI 1.4 adapter even very old macs that have TB will run the display just fine.
