People have to go out of their way to post something, and human nature is such that they're much more likely to expend that effort to post a negative opinion on something than a positive opinion. I wonder if at least some of the motivation for "Please rate us!" popups in mobile apps isn't just to get more ratings, but also to get a more representative (i.e., more positive) sampling of user opinions as well.
