The (surprising) solution is to first assign a space character, then the empty string.
So (I'm guessing), in that http://jsfiddle.net/dahjelle/zVjfY/ http://jsfiddle.net/dahjelle/zVjfY/ code, change
field.value = clearValue;
to
field.value = ' '; field.value = clearValue;
