My boss recently had a problem where they couldn't log into their Mac even though their password hadn't changed. With two minutes of googling I found it was very simple to enter single user mode and recover their account. Pretty neat, but a little disconcerting how easy it is to access your files if your laptop gets stolen. Helps to hammer home the idea that encrypting your drive is really important.
