I think you are mixing up ethical responsibilities with legal ones. I dont think its plausible to tie in a bunch of red tape around open source that makes attribution / repayment a legal obligation, but I do believe in karma (in a practical sense, not mythical) If I heavily benefit from open source, while I dont have any legal obligations to do anything about it, I believe the right thing to do is to contribute back to the community, upstream patches, new tools, promoting it etc etc.
