Ask HN: how to answer the "where do you wanna be in 1 year" question?
Today I got asked "where do you want to be in 1 year?" at a job interview.
My answer probably sucked. I realized that I'm just starting my career and that I'm constantly coming across awesome new opportunities that I decide to chase. In college, we had to write down our goals for every year. Year in, year out, I achieved MUCH more than the goals I had written down, but I usually didn't reach the goals I had written down. I simply couldn't foresee that my new found knowledge would drive me in another direction. For example: I once experimented by installing and using Oracle. I thought it would be cool to learn everything about it. But the more I learned about it, the less I liked it. Meanwhile some other very cool new stuff came across, and I decided to start learning that. I turned out to be really awesome, so I took a deep dive into it. I think that the 'goals list' is only holding you back to achieve the real interesting opportunities that come across your path completely unexpectedly.
I know that I'm an overachiever, that I want to learn as much as I can, that I want to take responsibility in my job, that I want to have an impact, but I really don't know how to measure all that, or attach a concrete goal to it.
So what I just wrote down is roughly what I answered, but I felt really bad that I couldn't provide concrete goals of what I wanted. It felt like I didn't know what I want, something that's usually bad. But I don't think I'm bad, I want to achieve a lot, I just know that I cant see into the future :)
How should I have answered this?
