MPEG are currently in the exploration stage of two patent unencumbered video specs -- one based on baseline H.264 with patent grants, to be part of MPEG-4 (Web Video Coding), and another, its own standard (Internet Video Coding), based on unencumbered technology (via expiration or otherwise.) Doubtful either will be competitive with H.265, but these do exist and you can find the working drafts on MPEG's site.
- ZeroGravitas 13y agoI'm aware of both. The former has no plan to convince the patent holders that have stymied progress for the last decade beyond asking them nicely, again. The latter is too little, too late. Google's submission to MPEG of VP8 as VCB should be interesting to watch though.
- ksec 13y agoThx, never knew that. The biggest problem seems to be MPEG-LA then.
