Cell phones at a loss to get people tied up with the contract. But the cheaper the phone gets, the more expensive the contract appears. In my opinion, anyone that wants an iphone and can deal with the monthly bill is more than happy to fork over the $99. Bringing down the price point from there without adjustments in the contract is meaningless.
- paulgb 17y agoYeah, I never understood the obsession with the price points of the phone when it is tied to a contract. It's like saying a car costs $1,000 because that's what the down payment is.

Consoles priced below $200 account for approximately 80% of their total sales. I think the magic price for cell phones is under $100. It's entirely possible that AT&T knows that, from data, the magic price point is $80.
