There are elements of math all over computer programming. I like the blog of Jake Vanderplas - an astrophysicist at U Washington - who liberally mixes Python and mathematics as applied to his field. jakevdp.github.io/blog/
I just got interested in image processing - one of the branches our bloggers says is specialized. The image processing textbooks use fourier analysis and convolutions to get information out of images. This is probably how instagram works.
Functional programming is another area that using mathematics - in this case category - to build an alternative to object oriented programming. To the train eye tutorials like http://twitter.github.io/scala_school/ http://twitter.github.io/scala_school/ and books like http://homotopytypetheory.org/book/ http://homotopytypetheory.org/book/ have something in common.
Mathematics looks irrelevant to coding because mathematicians are not using programming.
Math requires thinking very hard about the algorithms they are using. This is time one could spend coding or drinking with friends.
