- warmwaffles 13y agoWe would have to know they are suicidal ahead of time. By that point if I knew they were suicidal, I would definitely talk to that person a lot more and invite them to events with my friends.
- dmckeon 13y agoOr, we could talk to people, invite them to events, and acknowledge their contributions. Just a thought.
- mistercow 13y agoThe factors that lead to suicide are generally a lot more complicated than that. If you get to really know someone who is suicidal, you'll realize that there doesn't tend to be all that much connection between reality and the urge to kill oneself. If we want to reduce the number of suicides, we need to do a much better job at addressing of mental illness. Anything else is just window dressing.
- kabdib 13y agoThe suicides and attempted suicides I've know have been variously caused by: - family and culture-driven stress - alcoholism - emotional issues beyond the pale So in my experience: No. Just saying "Hey, you've done a great job" (or whatever) wouldn't even be appropriate, or be listened to, or work.
- LekkoscPiwa 13y agoTo me it seems lonelyness is the major issue when reading examples here. People in the US are so hopelessly lonely. I fight with my wife, but hey, then I have a brother, 2 cousins, parents and at least 30+ friends in town. As does my wife. This allows you to vent outside of work and sometimes home and is healing. In the US I get constantly depressed. Not at all in Poland. And I've been in the US long enough that this is just a lifestyle here. Work, work, work, no friends or fake friends. Family and real friends afar away. It's impossible not to get crazy. The quality of social life in the US is just very, very low. I'm wondering if all these social anxieties and emotional issues/mental issues are not caused by that.
