- koralatov 13y agoYou and me both --- I remember stumbling across .ARJ files on abandonware sites at the tail-end of the '90s. Even then, they were something of a curio; ZIP was dominant format, and RAR was gathering pace.
- tssva 13y agoYou feeling ancient thinking back about Pak, lharc, arj and bimodem makes me feel really ancient. I remember dialing the BBS on the phone and then sticking the handset in the acoustic coupler of my Novation CAT which was connected to the LNW System Expansion attached to my TRS-80 Model 1.
- AceJohnny2 13y agoYou had 300b/s both ways and you were _grateful_ for it! To compare, apparently the download bandwidth with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is between 3500b/s and 12000b/s: http://www.astrosurf.com/luxorion/qsl-mars-communication3.htm http://www.astrosurf.com/luxorion/qsl-mars-communication3.ht...
- pjmlp 13y agoMe too. I still remember the joy of being able to use ARJ in MS-DOS to split archives across multiple floppies. Which had the feature before PkZip, if memory does not trick me. Or my friends on the Amiga world exchanging LHA files.
- caprad 13y agoI remember finally finding the docs for all these different formats, and I wrote a program that would analyse all the files in a folder, and tell you what format they were, and what files were in them. I was so happy when I got that working.
