Linus Pauling quit Caltech over this, having fought to the highest levels of the government to allow Tsien to visit his dying (father? grandfather?) in China. The man was accused of being a Communist so harshly, he decided he'd rather actually be one and returned home regardless of the US refusal to grant him a visa to make it a round-trip.
