Isn't this a role that 3d printing and Quadcopters are filling for like-minded tinkerers? Extension projects : for instance, if one has a quadcopter and a go-pro, then the next problem is figuring out a cheaper gimbal mount (using BLDCs and a micro-controller/gyroscope).
