If you don't announce what you're doing and why, people will always assume the worst. I'd be interested in finding out if there is an economic story-behind-the-story. I'll echo other people's thoughts that it's great that this doesn't leave the users high and dry. There has to be a reason for not doing the typical acqui-hire that is more than altruism. Perhaps the investors didn't want to sell cheap, and it was more economical for the founders to keep their stakes and move on? Great to see them promote from within, and I wish them all the best!
