Of course, this is perfectly good C: const char *f() { return "abc"; } void g() { const char * s = f(); puts(s); } Nothing temporary is created at all. It's rather convenient.

But now there's no one to destroy the object (in a non-trivial case). Returning a reference lets RAII take its natural course.

  There's nothing to destroy. The string is static.
