This is an equally strong argument for teaching plumbing or woodworking.

  Neither teaches abstract thought. However, I do believe at least the basics of both you mentioned should be taught as well. If you can't fix a damaged wooden door frame or change the o-rings in a faucet by 18, you haven't been prepared for life.
