I wonder if there are any rigorous studies on the side-effects of Japan's host industry (which is exactly what you described). Business seems to be pretty good

  Business is indeed extremely good but those hostesses themselves are in debt or adore lonely and resort to going to host clubs (the male equivalent) where they get entertained. Vicious cycle. Exists in Korea too from what friends there have told me. In the early evening you see salons packed with young hostess women getting ready and getting their hair done, and a few hours later the same salons are packed with young men hosts who are getting ready to entertain the hostesses when they get off their shift.
