That is an interesting point. You can of course always buy an annuity to benefit from the risk spreading whilst retaining control over your pension funds up to that point.
Are there products that let you do this pre-retirement as opposed to at retirement? If so they certainly don't seem as popular as the traditional save-to-65-then-buy-one approach.
